Edward Hopper Exhibit - MFA Boston
D and I went to the MFA this morning to catch the Edward Hopper exhibit. We got the audio tour headsets as well. Well worth it. I really enjoyed the exhibit. They have a fantastic collection of his early water colors as well as lots of his oils. The iconic “Nighthawks” was there. Wim Wenders does the voice narration for that part of the audio tour. Very nice.
It was very crowded at the exhibition this morning. So crowded that I found myself longing to be transported into Hopper’s paintings. I didn’t really care that I would have ended up on an empty street in a deserted factory section of town, or on some rooftop with smokestacks, or even with the hopeless and alienated individuals in Nighthawks, just so long as people weren’t kicking Caney, bumping me, or otherwise invading my personal space.
What I liked best (besides his sense of light and space) in Hopper’s works is that lots of his images resulted from him being a contrarian. Hopper focussed on things other artists ignored because they were deemed too ordinary, drab, or downright ugly.
Afterwards, D and I had a great lunch of tasty salads at the museum restaurant outside the giftshop.
